Baltimore, Md. (May 9, 2024) – On March 29, 2024, The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) launched its city-wide traffic enforcement initiative.

In an effort to reduce traffic violations and fatalities, BPD officers began issuing warnings and citations to those who committed traffic violations.

From March 29 through May 3, 206 citations were issued within the enforcement zones. In that same timeframe, more than 3,300 traffic citations were issued across the city.

Since the initiative started, there have been more than 10,000 traffic stops. There have also been 60 arrests in which an officer indicated that a traffic violation was involved. Of those arrests, 17 involved a handgun violation.

Prior to March 29, there were 16 vehicle-related fatalities on Baltimore’s roadways for 2024. Since the initiative, there has been one traffic-related fatality in the city and none in an enforcement zone.

Additionally, BPD’s Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCOs) have been assessing environmental issues that can lead to traffic crashes and fatalities. The NCOs have been working with our partners at the Department of Transportation (DOT) to enact environmental improvements within the enforcement zones. Following 25 site visits, improvements included replacing stop signs, adding speed limit signage, reviewing light timing, adding pedestrian markings and traffic striping on the road, and evaluating the feasibility for speed cameras.

“Before the initiative, we were seeing way too many fatalities, serious accidents and road rage incidents,” said Police Commissioner Richard Worley. “By working with the Mayor’s Office, our law enforcement partners, other city agencies and the community, we are showing that we are reducing traffic-related incidents by issuing citations to drivers who do not obey the rules of the road. Please drive safely and be courteous of pedestrians and your fellow drivers.”

BPD’s traffic initiative is equitably distributed across all nine districts. It focuses on areas where we have seen the highest concentration of fatal accidents and injuries over the last three years. The initiative runs through Sept. 2, 2024.
