Northeast District Police-Involved Shooting Investigation -- UPDATE

On Aug. 21, 2023, at approximately 2:50 a.m., an off-duty BPD Officer was in a parked vehicle in 1300 block of Walker Avenue, after he was called in to investigate a carjacking that had just occurred in the 3300 block of Kentucky Avenue.

The officer, who was on an on-call duty status, was preparing to drive to the location to investigate the carjacking, when a vehicle pulled alongside his vehicle.

A suspect exited the vehicle, brandished a firearm and approached the officer’s vehicle in an attempt to carjack the officer’s vehicle.

The BPD officer retrieved his duty weapon and fired in the direction of the assailant.

The suspect returned to their vehicle and fled the scene.

The suspect’s vehicle was later located abandoned at the intersection of Loch Raven Boulevard and Walker Avenue. The vehicle was determined to be stolen in Baltimore City on Aug. 20, 2023.

On Aug. 21, 2023, at approximately 7:42 a.m., Eastern District patrol officers responded to the 200 block of East Lafayette Avenue, for a report of a shooting. Once there, officers located a 15-year-old male suffering from a graze wound.

Upon speaking with the victim, he confessed to officers that he was involved in the attempted armed carjacking in the 1300 block of Walker Avenue and was shot during this incident.

The 15-year-old male was later arrested and transported to Juvenile Booking.

The involved officer was Detective Aaron Cain. Detective Cain has been a member of the Baltimore Police Department since October 2001. He has been placed on routine administrative leave during this investigation.

The Baltimore Police Department’s Special Investigations Response Team (SIRT) continues to investigate this incident. Due to the officer being in an on-call duty status, there is no body worn camera footage of this incident.
